About Coastwise

Coastwise was established in 1999 when the principal, Paul Martin, was required to retire from his employment with the RNLI at the age of 55. He had served for 32 years, with the last 15 as full time coxswain/mechanic of an offshore lifeboat. For several years afterwards he was also assessing lifeboat personnel around the coast within the RNLI competency based training scheme. The school is therefore extremely safety aware.

As well as training lifeboat crews both ashore and afloat, he has for many years been instructing RYA shorebased courses in navigation, radio, diesel engine and radar.

With previous experience in the inshore fishing industry, training for commercial fishermen through Seafish Industries has been provided in an area from North Yorkshire to the Thames.

Paul qualified as a RYA Yachtmaster Instructor in 1997 for motor, and in 1999 for sail, becoming a Yachtmaster Examiner in 2000. Several RYA practical courses were conducted for lifeboat officers, and after leaving the RNLI, courses were run from Hull in a 42ft motor cruiser.

In 2006 the training centre was relocated to Hartlepool with a 40ft Nelson “Lady Emma”, being used as the school boat for practical courses. The Nelson hull has a well established record for sea-keeping ability, having been built extensively as fishery protection, range guard duty, police, training and pilot vessels. She is fitted with twin 180hp engines and is shaft driven.

A popular service now provided is individual or group instruction for fishermen and small commercial vessel operators wishing to attain the certification to skipper commercial vessels under MCA coding up to the level of MCA <200gt Oral exams.

Own-boat tuition and deliveries have also proved to be services much in demand.

Lady Emma is also available for skippered charter work such as survey, boarding, environmental, patrol, photographic, personnel & package carrying etc. She is coded for 10 persons to 60 miles from a safe haven.
