Preparation course for <200gt MCA Oral exam
Full details of both the syllabus and the exam application process are included in –

Before applying to the MCA for a Notice of Eligibility and for examination (NOE), the following certification is required –
- Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence followed by 6 months service.
- Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course (not required if CoC before 31.7.2003).
- Human Element, Leadership & Management - 3 day HELM(O) course.
- GMDSS radio - ROC or full GOC, (LRC can be converted to ROC).
- STCW 95 – firefighting, 1st Aid, Sea Survival & PSSR.
From 1.1.2017 these STCW courses must have been taken or updated in the previous 5 yrs
From 1.1.2017 the <200gt cert is not valid on ECDIS vessels unless this course is taken.
Yachtmaster Offshore CoCs cover to 150 miles from a safe haven
Yachtmaster Ocean covers unlimited miles from a safe haven.
Yachtmaster Shorebased – if done as an on-line course ensure the Training Centre can
arrange the 3 final exam papers to be signed off by them as invigilated & endorsed by RYA.
Since January 2014, Coastwise has run 5 day intensive preparation courses at Hartlepool for those
that already have a NOE or nearly ready to apply.
The MCA <200gt oral examination is not arranged for the end of the course as most learners, rather than risk failure, may feel they want more time to self learn from the course notes before taking the exam.
Numbers are kept to a maximum of 6 learners per course with a sliding scale price of - £230 per person for 6 learners to £485 per person for 2 learners.
This price includes comprehensive course notes and can be reduced if time is reduced.
Also flexible courses for individuals as 1:1 at sensible prices.
